Book Review: Don’t Wake Up by Liz Lawler

Don’t Wake Up by Liz Lawler

Goodreads / Amazon

5 / 5 Stars!!

Highly highly recommended! I picked up Don’t Wake Up for the May’s read for Criminally Book Club, and I am so glad that I did! One of the best medical thrillers I have ever read!

Book Description

Alex Taylor wakes up in a strangely familiar room, the bright lights, the steady sound of a heart monitor, and the smell of disinfectant… but something is different. Alex suddenly realizes she’s the patient this time and is strapped to the operating table. A strange man is standing over her and all Alex knows is he isn’t a doctor. This “Doctor” promises not to harm her, only if she can answer his question right.

The next thing Alex knows, she wakes up completely unharmed, and no one will believe her terrifying story. Ostracised by her friends, partner, police, and colleagues Alex begins to think they’re right…she is crazy. Until she meets the next victim!

Review

Oh, where to even start!? Liz Lawler writes one of the most compelling and realistic medical thrillers I have read this year! She keeps you guessing till the end on who this “Doctor” really is. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time and was constantly saying, “Just one more chapter!” It was so hard to put Don’t Wake Up down! Lawler draws you in during the first couple of chapters, and she never loses momentum. As events unfold the reader can clearly see everything is related to Alex, but if only the cops would realize it too! The characters and plot line were beautifully written. Lawler gives you a mixture of loveable characters and some that you can’t stand!

Even though this is labeled a “medical thriller” there isn’t too much medical jargon to bog you down. Just enough to make you feel in a medical setting, but not enough to need a dictionary nearby as you read!

Conclusion

I highly highly recommend reading Don’t Wake Up! Such a great psychological thriller and doesn’t get boring or slow. The chapters are perfect, not too short and not too long! Just long enough to keep saying, “One more chapter!” I really enjoyed Alex’s character. It was interesting seeing how her life unraveled just because no one believed her. I think it speaks volumes for women who are in the exact same situation, no one believes them.

Lawler’s plot was spectacular. The ending was perfect as it was one that was difficult to see coming, which is why it was so hard to put down! I can’t wait to read more by Liz!!
